Blog 5 - Ian Sample and Deepfakes

Before reading and actually understand more about deepfakes, I never fully realized how rare truth and authenticity has become in our current digital world. At first, I saw them as funny, with no true meaning behind them. Those quick  clips that usually show celebrities doing unrealistic things. On all of my social media platforms, the algorithm is constantly feeding me with AI videos of famous individuals like Jake Paul doing things, you would never see him participating in real life. I have been able to spot the differences in real vs AI content, but a lot of people unfortuantly can't.

Deepfakes use artificial intelligence to distort voice or videos of people doing or saying things that never happened. The fact that almost anyone can now make one without requiring special apps or specific knowledge about AI is a bit unnerving. I have witnessed firsthand, my grandparents being confused over reality and AI, which especially impact older generations and young children aswell, who are vulnerable to misinformation. What’s most scary is that these videos can shape political opinions and damage reputations.

Ian Sample’s discussion of deepfakes revealed just how fast AI is evolving. I just watched a video about how much AI has progressed within a few months. Small details like it not knowing how to generate hands, has since been corrected. It’s becoming nearly impossible to tell real from fake. This has made me reflect on how easily we beleive what we see online and the trust we have in our algorithms.
